I am just starting my herd and have recently talked to different breeders here in Texas. When I asked about tattooing they all said that they don't actually tattoo the goats - they just fill in the info on the registration. I've done so much reading in the last year on goat raising to prepare myself for this adventure and everything talks about tattooing them. So my question is...is it actually required to tattoo them or not?

    Thanks!;)

How do you know the goat you are getting is the goat on the papers if there is no tattoo?
I'm in tx too and the breeders I know do actually tattoo, not lie about it on the papers.

That is what I was wondering! I just didn't know if it was optional or required for a registered goat.....

    ADGA says you must tattoo.

I got a registered goat and the breeder didn't tattoo. I didn't care since I had a tattoo set and I read that the tattoo can distort and become unreadable if done too young and the ear grows. Also tattoo's can fade and need redone before taking the goat to a show.
