New doe - looks unhealthy

My husband brought this doe home yesterday and she did not look well kept. She was very dirty. She is in milk. This morning when I went to milk her I took a closer look at her I noticed her face didn’t look great. She is a Nigerian dwarf. What do you think the balding is on her face? How does she look in general? What are your thoughts? Where should I start with getting her to optimal health? She is 5 years old

Baulding could be copper deficiency. You might ask the previous owner when the last gave copper and how much. Usually it is the coat and tail that are the initial sign of copper deficiency. They develop what is called fishtail, and their tail looks more like the fin on a fish. Actually hair starts falling out the tail at its tip and all the hair around it gives a fishtail appearance.

If you cannot ascertain the copper status. Either take it to the vet, or give some small doses of copper but err on the side of lower doses.

Also check her for worms and make sure she had her CDT shots. You can give her more than one shot of CDT and she should be ok, but check with your vet first.
