My name is Janey and i am new to this list. I run boer goats mostly but have about 13 milk goats and am in the process of starting a class A dairy. We re going to run about 200 head of dairy goats. I have a boer baby that was born on the 24th of Oct. She was doing well at first with her mother but noticed she wasn't thriving well and watched as her brother hit her off and wouldn't let her eat much. We pulled her into the house with the other bottle babies and she was so hungry and ate and did well for about 2 days. Now she has "forgotten" how to suck. She has some diarhea and so with the thought of cocci I gave her sulfa for two days and last night gave corid as the sulfa did not seem to work. I also have given her B-Complex for three days and dexamethasone last night as she is really grinding her teeth and I thought maybe she was in a little pain. Since then the grinding has stopped but she will not eat. I also gave pig pump to stop the diareha and tubed her this morning with milk and nutri drench. I was looking for some eloctrolytes but could not find any here will have to go to the store soon. What else can I do as this goat is circling the drain fast. Thanks for anything you can tell me.

Have you taken a temp? If the kid is chilled, get the temp up as it won't eat and then dehydration will continue, if it has a fever than infection or illness. When was last bowel movement and what consistency? When was the last time it peed?

Where do you live and what weather was it in?

Someone will be along in a few minutes with more knowledge, I have treated very few baby goats.

If you are going to tube feed make sure you use goat milk or Grade A store bought warm it to 102 degrees and only tube 2 to 3 oz at a time.
I wouldn't give dex for pain would use banamine. if she is circling she needs B1 Thiamin fast and would be polio
feeding milk only not electrolytes. how much she weighs is how much sulfa drugs or corid you give according to the weight and the strenght you have.
A baby in pain won't eat period. so get her warmed up before worring abt feeding or even the diarreah.
Please update your profile so we know where you live.

It's almost always selenium when you have a kid who won't suck. With a bo-se shot and a 400 IU capsule of vitamin E given orally they bounce right back, continue the E daily for several days. You live in selenium and copper defficiency haven where you are. Also sadly if you truly are going to run a herd that large, you won't have time to individually care for a kid like this....you need to copper bolus and give selenium injections to all doelings you will keep for replacements, and work on your mineral program. Huge difference in having a few goats and running a commercial outfit. One day you will be able to (if you stay in it) look at a kid like this and either call someone to get her, or put her down right then, because you physically don't have the energy, physically or emotionally to deal with anything that takes more of your time.

So prevention in your herd becomes the top priority. Tested does before you purchase, vaccinate, everything should be about minimal output which means relieveing your stress, the goats physical stress and above all else nutritional stress. Vicki
