Good Weights?

Discussion in 'Dairy Goat Info' started by Faithful Crown Nubians, Jun 9, 2008.

  1. Just wanted to get some thoughts from you all. :)

Do these weights seem about right for these goats?

These weights were taken with a weigh tape.
Milo-Purebred nubian buckling born 4/10/08. He weighs 35lbs.

Delilah's kids- Are these good nubian weights?
    DOB: 5/13 Birth weights- 6lb-doe 9lb-buck

    Doe kid- 15lbs
    Buck kid-19lbs

    Thanks in advance! :)

    Hi,

I'm going off of memory, and well... :lol

But I believe the general rule is that you want them to gain about 10 pounds a month. That being the case, it looks like your kids are doing good.

    :yeahthat

Yup. Kids should gain approx. 1.67 lbs every five days. Total of 10 lbs. per month.
If you have a 9 lb kid at birth, one month later, on the average, he/she should be about 19 lbs.

    Hope this helps. :)

:lol...my Togg buckling didn't read the book or research!
I weigh taped him last night, just out of curiosity...DOB 5/3/08 11#'s at birth...5 weeks old= 43#'s! I taped him twice, then crammed him into a 5 gallon bucket (with hubbies help) and put it on the milk scale... 44#'s.

Others a few days ago for coccidia treatment:
    Togg doelings
    3/21=51#'s
    3/21=43#'s
    4/17= 38#'s
    Saanen
    4/9= 42#'s

Some of those babies just don't look that heavy...LONG bodied and tall. But, I guess they're doing ok.

My babies are on self feeders (from day 1) with a 14% pelleted horse feed, alfalfa hay, all the milk they want in twice a day feedings- water cleaned every 2 days- Decoxx-M in the lambar. Fecals are done every 3 weeks until they are about 7 mo.old to keep coccidia and parasites in check. I'll keep them on the feeders until they are 7-8 months old and then go to twice a day feedings in amounts that they will clean up in about 20 min. Alfalfa hay and/or pellets are kept in front of them.

Lamanchas weight taped 2 days ago
    buckling 2/25=59#'s
    doeling 2/29=54#'s
They are fed free choice hay, an 18% medicated meat goat pellet, and are still getting milk in the A.M.
