Is it safe to give gentymicin to a bred doe - at any stage in her pregnancy? Thanks, Kristin
Nothing is "safe" to use in the first 40-45 days of pregnancy. We prefer to wait until after these days for safety of the fetus. In a life and death situation...then the does life comes first. And yes, I have used it in such a case.
Gentomycin does not cause the side effects in goats that it does in other species. Bone degeneration, teeth discoloration,ect...
BUT...this warning goes along with it:
Do not use in food producing animals.
CAUTION : GENTAMICIN SHOULD NEVER BE USED IN FOOD PRODUCING ANIMALS OR ANIMALS INTENDED FOR FOOD (residues can be detected in kidney tissues for up to 18 months).
Kristin explain your doe's situation to Kaye in a PM. Get her opinion on this.
:yeahthat There may be another drug to use...depends on the problem.
