    Ginger kidded tonight.

I had 3 does due with no confirmed breeding date... earliest possible was 12/27.

    Ginger is a 3yo LM/Nub X

kidded single 9lb buck in 06 no labor signs... kidded in under 1 hr of does being checked

    cloudburst in 07

    ------------------

    this AM she had *goop*

so she was checked every 20-30min throughout the day...
report at 7PM... was NO more goop... no sign of labor...
    up & walking around

OK we've had this with all 3 unknowns the last few days... backed off on checks....

about 8PM... little before... frantic report... dead kid

    ran down (ok tottered down)

dead buck kid had dh try swinging as I could not... nothing....
doe not straining, but still standing there...
got warm mollasses water for doe she drank up

got bucket of hot water, washed up, lubed up with ky and went in to check for a second kid....

felt... placenta... tried to feel around it... and felt something like *sticks*... pulled out 4-5 small bones!

OK. so? Another kid? died at some point? The blood was unusually dark to me, the smell was a touch off, but NOT FOUL... part of the placenta came out in pieces...

    OK.

So what is this? What do I do now?

She did not like me in there but also did NOT fight me...

I told boys to go ahead and start evening milking... while I came up to post...

just had a runner report she was trying to steal from other feeders so I said feed her...

    Now what?

    wait & watch?
if there are signs of a dead kid does she need antibiotics (I do not normally give for going in)
do I need to flush while she is open?
how long do I wait for placenta or more *parts*?

kid looks full term lots of hair...

muzzle & tongue look unusually dark....

Sorry went down to deal with goat....

    calcium (done)
oxytocin if I had it... don't
milk her and do lots of udder massage (done) (we did NOT milk her out)
the goat equivalent of fundal pressure (done)
and rub tetracycline around inside her uterus (done)

she goes on penicilin in the AM...

we talked *gross factor*.... since I have heard her talk about that and explained since I was not grossed out I was unsure :lol

FTR - by the time I got off with her, gathered the meds and such and got down she had passed the placenta... I brought it up and looked it over and it looks normal and actually intact to me....

when going back in this time a small piece of something more came out... but non recognizable...

    Lynn,
I had a Nigi deliver a healthy kid and then the little buck that came after was already decomposing...it was awful to see but started the doe on antibiotics and she is fine now...I think what happened to her was about a week or so before she kidded she took a hard hit from another doe and it knocked her to the ground and she rolled over...the placenta of the buck was odd too but you could tell maybe the placenta twisted with the butt and fall...I hope you doe is doing better today and will continue to get better too...

thanks... the thing is I can't imagine this doe being hit... anything is possible but SHE is the one I always worry about putting a new doe with... Ginger is my bully. sigh

I did leave her in with the buck until about 2 weeks ago because I did not have a confirmed breeding on her... but she was also in with my *gentleman* buck...

I'll likely never know... I am though toying with breeding some for Nov kids this yr... she'll be one of them.

It is a good thing you didn't get grossed out - lots of potential here besides being pregnant yourself! Hope she heals up without a problem and the rest of your kidding seson goes smooth.

OK never had a doe really have swelling post kidding... is this reasonably normal and just needs prep h or is it more serious?

dd is getting temp right now... ok CRUD! Temp is 100.9!! Working just with oral calcium right now... the liquid not the stuff that burns...

    advice please

due to dh's work we are on a later schedule than most so just doing the AM stuff now...

Prep H works wonders. Mine back up to the tube when they see me coming. :D Looks normal for a rough kidding.

OK I went down to look at her...

she was laying in the shelter, but stood when I went in...

temp was 101.8... still low, but enough higher I think first temp might have been wrong... went over with dd how far to insert thermometer....
