We have a doe that had the scours about 2 weeks ago and has not cleared up all the way. This morning we went down to feed and she had a baby about 4 weeks early. It looked like the baby had been alive at one point. We think she has another in her but are not sure. Is there anything we should do for her?

Is she doing anything now? Contracting? A discharge? Do like Sondra says if you think there is a kid in there, lube up and go searching. Otherwise it you will not know and it can get worse.

Sorry about the kid, and welcome to the forum.

Do go in and make sure she delivers the other kid and the placenta. If the kid was all licked off, than there was also plenty of time for the doe to also eat her placenta.

Now focus back on the doe. What has caused the scouring? What are you worming with? What is this does diet? Did you change anything recently? Also take her temp for the next few days to make sure you don't have something bacterial going on.

Worm her today for the stress of kidding, and if you can take a fecal sample in to see what else is going on. Stressed goats even older ones can get cocci also. Vicki

Can she not carry another kid to full term if she has one? If she has another kid, should we pull it? If so, why? The kid was licked off, but could have been done by the doe or a dog.

She is not actively having contractions.

We wormed with Prohibit about 2 weeks ago or so, as this seems like the only wormer that works well anymore. There is nothing on the package about problems with pregnancy and this wormer, and we had 2 vets tell us to use this wormer.

No I didn't mean the wormer caused the early kidding, although overdosing it can give you neuro problems.

But whatever caused the diarrhea likely caused the preterm delivery. Is she anemic? Did you do a fecal to see the problem you are having with what parasite that you had to move to levamisole?

Is she your only doe due to kid? Because in most abortions it's a storm, unless the doe is the low man on the totem pole and beat up by bigger does. The first doe due to kid aborts, then the next...why I would pay attention to what this doe is showing you in your herd. Vicki

She was not the first doe due to kid. We had about half of the does before her and half after. We are not sure what caused the scours to occur. We also have some very aggressive, bred, older does. So maybe she got picked on. And because she was sick, she was weak and just couldn't do anything.

    Re: Abortion? - UPDATE

The doe died sometime this morning. :sniffle We had not changed her feed at all. We didn't go in and look for another kid. If there was one, would that have killed her? We like to try to let the goats do what they can and only help if absolutely necessary. It's not always easy to know when that is.

Sorry you lost her I would imagin in her weakened state the abortion was the last straw and also if there was another kid in there Always go in and see if there is another one even if early as this was. What is their calcium intake? worming really if fecals show needed am going to do some research on the wormer you used that late in pregancy.

    .............................

    Like get through kidding.

Sorry this happened, spend some time reading on the forum...fecals, worming, bo-se your mineral program and nutrition. Getting does in excellent health before breeding and especially kidding is the only way to have healthy uneventful pregnancies and deliveries. There is enough stuff to go wrong without having normal management taken care of.

Lots has problems with worms this last summer and moved to other womers only to find out their problems were 4th stage HC or liver flukes. Both mostly caused by copper defficency...the rest were cocci cases even in adult animals. Vicki

To add to what Vicki and Sondra posted...

If your doe had another kid inside of her there is no way she would be able to carry it to term after aborting the first one. Always go in and do a pelvic exam to make sure all kids have been delivered.

Probit is a Levamisole Hydrochloride. Levasole can cause abortions.
