Boer crosses and Alpines N.Y.

« on: February 08, 2010, 07:02:43 PM »

We have a 2 year old Boer cross doe... Last year, she had twins.. a buck and a doe...
She immedietaly fell in love with her buck, and totally ignored the doe kid! I got her nursing, etc,....she seemed fine... (It was in the single digits at the time, and so, like we always do, we blow-dried and shirted the kids.) That evening, we found the buck kid fat and happy and snoozing with mom, and the doe kid freezing and unfed, and standing in a corner, almost catatonic, shivering. ACK! She was ice-cold! To make a long story short, she was a house-kid for weeks.
This year, that same doe had triplets... one buck, and 2 does...
Well... guess what?! YEPPO! The sun rises and sets on the buck kid, and the does are garbage!!!! What a dopey doe! We are now helping her doe kids...she has PLENTY of milk, but just HATES them, and refuses to let them nurse! Go figure... And so, we feed her on the milkstand, and bring little Sophia and Backwards Blanche in there and plunk their little butts onto the milkstand so they can also nurse, like their BIG brother who... up to this point, has been getting EVERYTHING, and has the poundage to prove it!! lol! This seems to be working VERY well! Ever noticed gender preferences in your does?

Had a French Alpine doe yrs ago who showed this preference.  Just loved the buck but kicked the doe to the curb!  Thats when I found out that you can use store milk...and If memory serves me right it was Vicki who told me that.  Smiley

I keep reading about situations like these?  Wierd..maybe it is an instict thing "keep the species alive thing or something."  I noticed my one doe cleans the boy hinder better than her other girls...wierd.  I really assume I will never know the mind of a goat.

Maybe this is why mine are having all buck kids this year.
