Staph A. Sensitivity results
CR was sensitive to: Pirlimycin, Tetracycline, Cephalothin and Ampicillin.
Help me! My vet is very good about listening to us for treatment, so I want to make sure we knock this infection out. What do you recommend?

Re: Staph A. Sensitivity results
My first choice would be to take this info to a vet and let him prescribe the right meds according to what this sensitivity showed. However, since most of the time we have to figure it out on our own, I will say that I would use tetracycline systemically and Pirsue if you can get it. I am thinking off the top of my head that Today and Tomorrow are Cepholin, but not sure

Re: Staph A. Sensitivity results
If I had staph A I would use Pirsue as an infusion because that is what pirlimycin is, I would then use systemic gentemycin with pennicillin or ampicillin. I would treat her, get a clean milk test back and milk her through until she kids, not using the milk on mammals. Tetracycline has to be used at way to high of dosages for way to long of period to even begin to touch something like this in goats. Once clear think about vaccination of lysigin as part of your vaccination routine, not that it will keep all staph A away, but when a vaccinated doe does get a diagnosis of this it is rarely the udder threatening problem it is with non vaccinated does. I would also move my vaccination of my adult doe herd, unless she was a recently purchased doe to a 8 or 9 way clostridum to give more protection for clostridum against malignant edema. Vicki

Re: Staph A. Sensitivity results
Vicki- I just got the meds (vet had to order the Pirsue). How much of each do I give and for how long? I just want to insure that this gets knocked out.

Re: Staph A. Sensitivity results
Take your Pirsue infusion and squish about 2cc of the meds out of it so you can fit 2cc of your 100mg gentamycin into it, shake well and infuse, you will do this 3 times, 12 hours apart after milking out.
Systemically you will give 3cc per 100 pounds of your 100mg Gent once a day for 5 days, subq is fine. Any 300,000 unit penn is used at 3cc per 50 pounds subq for 7 to 10 days.
We have withdrawal of gent as an infusion in goatkeeping 101, but giving it systemically takes her off the milkstring for this lactation, the milk can't even be used for food producing animals who will have any chance of being butchered this year.
The gent has a roto rooter sort of effect in the udder, you can expect lots of tissue, blood etc...passing once it is given.
B vitamins, banamine, and keeping her hydrated are key, use subq fluids if she is not eating...and milk her last.
Cleaning for infusions is getting the orifice clean, if the doe isn't complaining about you cleaning the orfice you are not doing a good enough job. Wear gloves and be as sterile as you can, which means not infusing in the barn if your barn is dirty. Vicki

Re: Staph A. Sensitivity results
Sorry Mary, I have no idea. Antibiotics are given in a complete series, perhaps ask you vet how he intended for you to use this small amount for Staph A. Perhaps he thought you were just going to infuse with it?
