Colostrum is heat treated by raising it's temperature to 135 degrees F and holding it there for 1/2 hour. Milk is pasteurized by raising it's temperature to 165 degrees and holding it there for 30 seconds. Milk was cooled in ice baths in the sink.
When I pasteurized milk I did it on my stovetop and it was a laborious task. I raised several sets of kids who tested CAE negative, even though I had positive animals. I stopped pasteurizing once I tested my herd, culled the CAE positive animals, and had clean tests for a couple of years. I still test annually because the ability to show negative test results has become a sales incentive.
